Understanding something and accepting something are not the same thing
In my work I’ve noticed that people with a very high competence on soft skills, often tend to accept things as soon as they understand them. This can have an adverse effect on their life. It’s important to understand and comprehend things. That’s a prerequisite to what makes us human. However if you completely accept what you understand and comprehend, it could be that the things that are not good for you, take up a place in your life because of this understanding of it. Because understanding and accepting are allowed equal footing. Here’s an example: We can comprehend why a person acts egotistical towards another. This is very important because by understanding the behavior, we can get along better with the person. If you however accept this behavior because you understand it, you could become too tolerant and allow that person to take advantage. Another example: If someone puts too much salt in the food, because (as we say) he’s in love, we can understand that, but if we also would accept that, then it follows that we would eat the overly salty food, and that would not be good for us. Some things we should keep to ourselves, like our values and tolerances, and should not impose these on others. This is just a short excursion into a topic that could be talked about unendlessly.
